Backgound
The engagement of Aboriginal people in natural resources management (NRM) in South Australia has taken another stride forward with the appointment of an Aboriginal Statewide Advisory Committee (ASAC).
The development follows the appointment of the Alinytjara Wilurara Natural Resources Management (NRM) Board in 2005 - the first of its kind in Australia - to oversee natural resources management activities in the north west of South Australia.
The committee will provide advice to the statewide peak body for natural resources management in South Australia - the NRM Council. The committee will focus on:
- Aboriginal engagement mechanisms in NRM regions (including a review of current activities);
- investment in Aboriginal NRM activities (including the incorporation of Aboriginal activities in regional plans and investment strategies); and
- encouraging NRM bodies to engage Aboriginal people.

ASAC Work Plan
ASAC held a workshop on 7 August 2007 to develop a work plan to guide its future operations. NRM Council endorsed the ASAC work plan at its meeting on 2 November 2007. The key outcomes of the work plan are:
- to revise the terms of reference of ASAC;
- to revise the membership of ASAC:
- to address the strengths and weaknesses of ASAC;
- to provide strategies to address each of ASAC's terms of reference; and
- to provide definitive actions over a 12 month period to address the strategies.
The work plan addresses the period of activity for ASAC from November 2007 to November 2008. The work plan will be updated to reflect progress of ASAC over this 12 month period.

Caring for Country - Aboriginal NRM Forum
On 25th and 26th September, 2008 the NRM Council sponsored an Aboriginal Natural Resources Management Forum in Port Augusta. The forum was held in a marquee on the grounds of the Standpipe Hotel. The Aboriginal Statewide Advisory Committee organised the forum on behalf of the NRM Council.
Approximately 170 people attended the event from across South Australia. A word document version of the official program can be accessed here: Program for Aboriginal NRM Forum.
